Abstract
Large aggregate base course mixtures are not a new idea, however, their application has been limited since there are no universally acceptable specifications or design method for these mixes. This laboratory research study focused on the following: (1) Establishment of gradation bands for mixtures with a maximum size of 2 1/2 in.; (2) Development of mixture design procedures; (3) Establishment of testing criteria needed for the design of these mixes; and (4) Development of application guidelines for the use of these mixes. Based upon the results of this study, a recommendation was made to use the developed procedure and guideline specifications in field trial sections.
