Abstract:
The mystery surrounding Mary Queen of Scots has been a source of heated historical debate for over 400 years. The story of the 'Casket Letters' adds richly to the scandal surrounding this powerful figure. A.E. MacRobert challenges the traditional view that Mary and her lover Bothwell, whom she considered a loyal supporter, concocted a plan to kill her husband, Lord Darnley. Instead, he argues that Mary, deeply concerned about Darnley's wild plot to oust her from the throne, simply wanted to bring Darnley back under her control - not murder him. These letters, comprised of eight letters and twelve love sonnets, were allegedly sent from Mary to Bothwell, who forced her into an unhappy mariage with Darnley. Mary, Queen of Scots and the Casket Letters argues that this tragic union was the catalyst to denigrating her name and reputation across Western Europe, resulting in the creation of the Casket Letters and her infamous character._x000D_ _x000D_ This forensic and scholarly re-examination of the controversy, together with edited copies of the 'Letters', is a detailed and powerful study for both scholar and general reader, and illimuniates sharply the dramatic events leading to Mary's imprisonment. It is essential reading for anyone intersted in royal history and biography, as well as the controversy surrounding this elusive Queen.
