Abstract:
Nature has long served as a rich source of inspiration for design, and biomimicry offers a forward-thinking approach to adddessing human needs by drawing on patterns and systems found in the natural world. This thesis explores how biomimicry is represented in Wallpaper magazine through a thematic analysis of design-focused articles. The material was selected using a keyword search that included variations such as "biomimicry" "biomimetic" "biologically inspired design." The analysis revealed three recurring themes: ecological consciousness, nature-derived forms, and production techniques. across the articles, sustainability consistently appeared as a key concern, positioning biomimicry as a pathway to environmentally responsible solutions. Many of the featured designs adopted organic, flowing forms that echoed natural geometries. While advanced digital tools like 3D printing, CNC cutting, and robotic fabrication were commonly used, traditional craft-based methods also played a meaningful role. The study ultimately contributes to the growing body of knawledge on advancing nature-inspired design practices by analysing case studies involving biomimicry and offers valuable insights and perspectives from an in-depth review of Wallpaper magazine. Overall, the study shows that Wallpaper magazine presents biomimicry as both a visual language and a method of innovation, closely tied to current debates around sustainable design and material experimentation.
