Abstract:
This extraordinary traditional African tale follows Nii, a young boy from Ghana, who stows away on a ship to the United States, the land of his dreams. Upon being discovered by the ship's captain, Nii is thrown overboard and about to be eaten by sharks when a mysterious rainbow fish swims up to protect him. Nii washes up on the shores of the south coast of the Zulu Kingdom, which proves to be a lush land that surpasses his wildest dreams. The rich, vibrant illustrations provide a glimpse of traditional African houses, farms, clothes, and food, while Zulu words and phrases are used and explained so young readers can learn a bit of the language.
