Abstract:
This e-book explores the use of the "Semantic web" as an organizational tool. It introduces the concept of the "Semantic Learning Organization" as an extension of the concept of the "Learning Organization" in the technological domain. The Guest Editors suggest that organizations that aim at being competitive and value-creating in the current changing world require an equally continuous cycle of learning and knowledge creation. This kind of active organizational behaviour in turn requires a rich technology-mediated support for information and knowledge. One of the critical elements for such supporting function is that of having information semantics that can be used to deliver some degree of "intelligence" both to daily tasks and also to strategy and decision-making. The technologies currently being developed under the common label of the "Semantic Web" can be considered as a toolbox that can be used to craft new approaches to driving organizational learning. Specifically this e-book explores the suggestion that it is semantics, ie. the representation of complex conceptual structures in computer-based form, which provide the material on which learning organizations may improve their behaviour.
