Abstract:
Demonstration Project No. 50, Sprinkle Treatment of Asphalt Pavements, was announced in November 1977. Fourteen participating agencies have constructed 25 separate demonstration installations in connection with this project, and one more is planned for later this year. This report presents a comparative summary of these projects, the history and background of sprinkle treatment, design considerations and construction guidelines, economic considerations, and specific construction and performance data for each project. Information from sprinkle treatment projects and corresponding control sections is tabulated and analyzed. Recommendations are made based on the experience gained from these projects. Aggregate types, aggregate gradations, coating rates and asphalt cements used for precoating, construction controls, equipment requirements, weather conditions during construction, placement problems and solutions, construction costs, sprinkle aggregate retention, and skid performance with texture measurement and speed gradients are a few of the subject areas covered in detail.
