Abstract:
Explores the historical and current activities of the ETIM, a terrorist organization that demands an independent fundamentalist Muslim state for the Uyghur ethnic minority in northwest China. The ETIM is China's most infamous militant group, known in the West for its links to Al-Qaida, its suspected members' detention at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base (GTMO), and its threats to attack the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Western, Russian, and Chinese media sources have documented the ETIM's existence for nearly 20 years. While its present size and capabilities are largely unknown, the ETIM has developed an online propaganda presence aligned with Al-Qaida's. Information in this book comes from the ETIM's now-defunct website and public statements; media reports from all over the world; PRC news releases, white papers, and statistical data; reports by human rights groups; academic accounts of Xinjiang's history; published U.S. Defense Department documentation on the Uyghurs detained at GTMO; and contemporary analyses by China scholars, counterterrorism experts, strategic think tanks, and congressional researchers.
