Abstract:
In The Geronimo Campaign, Odie B. Faulk, a leading historian of the American Southwest offers a lively and often chilling reassessment of the military campaign that ended with the surrender of Apache Chief Geronimo on August 25, 1886, calling attention to the campaign's ironies as well as its dangers and vicissitudes. Based on information collected over four decades by Charles B. Gatewood, Jr., including collected depositions from old soldiers and scouts, official documents, articles, extracts from relevant books, photographs by the hundreds, and the letters of Lt. Charles B. Gatewood himself, Faulk shows that the clash of these two cultures was an inevitable conflict setting up an inevitable defeat, and that the 1886 surrender was a recapitulation of almost every meeting of Indian and American in the West. A true American saga, this is a book for students who wish to understand the roots of, and the reasons for, the tragic Indian wars of the nineteenth century, a tragedy whose repercussions are still felt today.
