Trend of transition from fossil fuel to electrification in transportation is a reason of they do not emit any harmful emissions. Moreover, there would be no carbon emission per km travelled if the electricity is generated from renewable sources such as wind and solar. However, there are some drawbacks of these vehicles such as charging time being very long and the range of vehicles are not in the desired level. In order to eliminate these problems, battery cells are being charged in relatively high C-rates which accelerate the ageing of batteries and capacity fade. One reason for that is nonhomogeneous temperature distribution and temperature exceeding optimal operating temperatures. Furthermore, the excess temperature levels trigger degradation and thermal runaway risks. The thesis covers how the battery pack temperature uniformity and strict thermal control can be achieved with heat transfer enhancement by conduction (cold plates) and convection (liquid-vascular channels) mechanisms. In addition, energy consumption of the proposed electric vehicle battery pack systems was taken into account. First, the Li-ion battery cells were investigated individually. Experimental, analytical, and numerical methods were utilized to obtain realistic thermal and electrical characteristics of the Li-ion batteries. The experimental and analytical results were compared with the simulations to validate the numerical models. Then, Constructal theory was applied to the cooling designs to predict the configuration of the flow channels. The proposed thermal management techniques, which have low cost, easy application and lower energy consumption superiorities, can be implemented all types of electric vehicle battery packs with minor changes.
