Özet:
Based on original sources, this book questions the conventional wisdom qualifying the Mediterranean Muslim woman as a passive person subjected to the tyranny and misogyny of her religion, society and male relatives. Yet, based on information from that society (such as popular literary sources, medieval love poetry, proverbs, fatwa and legal analyses, original anthropological fieldwork, novels and autobiographical writings authored by women, contemporary artwork produced by or about women, etc.) This book clearly shows that women actively interacted not only within the private domains of society but also in the public realm. Specific case studies in this book of Arab, Andalusi and Kabyle women's lives bring to life the role played by women in different social, cultural, religious, economic, legal and political situations.
